Carlos Alcaraz is the favourite for clay-court glory on the men’s side

He has dominated the French Open since 2004, winning 14 of 18 titles. Now, his absence opens up the field. Djokovic, the 2021 champion, is poised to increase his record haul of Grand Slams to 23. But world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, as well as fellow rising stars Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas will throw significant obstacles in his path. On the women's side, Swiatek is making a bid to win her second French Open in a row and third overall. No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 3 Jessica Pegula and No. 6 Coco Gauff are all poised to make a run to the finals. Here are the big Day 4 matchups on May 31: (3) Novak Djokovic (Ser) v Márton Fucsovics (Hun) (1) Carlos Alcaraz Garfia (Spa) v Taro Daniel (Jap) (5) Jessica Pegula (USA) v Camilla Giorgi (Ita) Dates: Sunday, May 28 - Sunday, June 11 French Open schedule 2023 Sunday, May 28 1st Round - Men's and Women's Singles Monday, May 29 1st Round - Men's and Women's Singles Tuesday, May 30 1st Round - Men's and Women's Singles Wednesday, May 31 2nd Round - Men's and Women's Singles Thursday, June 1 2nd Round - Men's and Women's Singles Friday, June 2 3rd Round - Men's and Women's Singles Saturday, June 3 3rd Round - Men's and Women's Singles Sunday, June 4 4th Round - Men's and Women's Singles Monday, June 5 4th Round - Men's and Women's Singles Tuesday, June 6 Quarter-finals - Men's and Women's Singles Wednesday, June 7 Quarter-finals - Men's and Women's Singles Thursday, June 8 Semi-finals - Women's Singles Friday, June 9 Semi-finals - Men's Singles Saturday, June 10 Final - Women's Singles Sunday, June 11 Final - Men's Singles The French Open has begun with the second tennis Grand Slam of the season taking place over the next fortnight in Paris. 14-time winner and defending champion Rafael Nadal is not competing at Roland Garros due to injury, while British interest has taken a hit due to poor qualifying results and the absence of both Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu. Carlos Alcaraz is the favourite for clay-court glory on the men’s side of the draw, but Novak Djokovic will be desperate to take advantage of Nadal not being in town as he gets his first chance to move past the Spaniard with a 23rd Grand Slam title. There’s a big three at the top of the women’s game, with Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka ready to battle it out with two-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek. The trio have been trading blows throughout the season in the biggest tournaments, and it would be a surprise if it was not one of them lifting the trophy in just under a fortnight. With reigning women's champion Iga Swiatek returning from injury, clay king Rafael Nadal absent and men's favourite Novak Djokovic out of form, the French Open is set for plenty of drama. Djokovic enters the tournament knowing that victory will give him the outright men's record for Grand Slam titles, though he was recently bested by Holger Rune, whose rapid development may have caught a few more of his contemporaries off guard. Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner are amongst the most talented young stars on the circuit, but the volatile Dane might not be far behind them. For Daniil Medvedev, meanwhile, this is another chance to show his class – the towering Russian succeeded where Djokovic failed in Rome last week. For all the talk of the demise of tennis' big three, a new triumvirate has emerged in the women's game over the past 12 months, Swiatek being joined on the top step by Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. Those three have now won each of the last three slams. Swiatek may be the world No.1, but there's a strong argument to be made that Sabalenka has been the most impressive player on tour in 2023. Clay has long been considered Rybakina's weakest surface, so her victory in Italy earlier this month came as a shock to many. It was, admittedly, freakish at best, with three of her opponents having to retire. The best Tennis players in the world are descending on Paris, ready for a busy two weeks of courtside action with the tournament ending on Sunday, June 11. There's a schedule below that you can use to see when different rounds begin and end. Paris' Stade Roland Garros plays host to the French Open, the 126th such event, and this is the second Grand Slam of the year after the Australian Open in January. Defending champion Iga Świątek in the women's bracket will be playing in the French Open, though men's Rafael Nadal champ was forced to pull out prior to the start of the tournament. But there's stars all over the bracket, including Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Caspar Ruud, Jessica Peluga and many more. World No.2 Daniil Medvedev was eliminated by World No.172 Thiago Seyboth Wild, who is a qualifier at the French Open. He is one of eight seeded exits from the first round. However, the picture is even less predictable on the women's half of the draw with a sensational total of 14 seeded exits in the first round, though the top seven remain alive and kicking. Rafael Nadal will not feature in the French Open for the first time since 2004 due to a hip issue. The 14-time Roland-Garros champion's tennis career will draw to a close after a farewell tour in 2024. World No.1 Alcaraz has been in stunning form with four ATP titles to his name in 2023, including two 1,000-point events, but was toppled by the World No.135 Fábián Marozsán at the Italian Open. He will be desperate to make the most of compatriot Nadal's absence. The women's game looks no less unpredictable as World No.1 Świątek withdrew from Rome through injury, No.2 Aryna Sabalenka suffered an early exit and No.4 Rybakina continued her rise with a terrific victory in the final.
